Chiropractic and Pregnancy

During pregnancy a mother's body goes through enormous hormonal and physical changes, this is a natural process; however 50% of women experience significant levels of back or pelvic pain during their pregnancy.(1)

Chiropractic care has been shown to be safe for both mother and unborn children. (2) Having your spine checked by a Chiropractor helps to ensure that your pelvis is positioned and moving correctly to allow optimum room for your baby to grow and move.

Studies show that having your spine checked regularly by a Chiropractor may result in a less stressful pregnancy and a less uncomfortable delivery.(3)

Research also shows that correct alignment of the pelvis and spine contributes to a more straightforward labour with less pain and trauma for mother and child. A study conducted by Dr Irvin Henderson MD (4)  (a member of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees) demonstrated that, “Women who received chiropractic adjustments in their third trimester were able to carry and deliver their child with much more comfort".

Research shows that women may experience a 24% reduction in labour time with Chiropractic care during pregnancy and a 33% reduction in labour length for those mothers who have birthed before. (5)

After birth women again experience changes in their bodies as well as experiencing new stresses such as carrying an increasingly heavy baby around, Chiropractic can assist your spine to function optimally during these times.
